Chapter Seven
“You’ve forgotten, haven’t you, Kane?”
The old woman spoke so softly she caused a shiver to slide up my spine. “What are you doing here, old crone?” I had no time for anything except getting drunk at the moment. I’d stopped by a common bar and sequestered myself in a dark corner for exactly that reason. The last thing I needed was this old woman dressed in a faded house dress chatting me up at the bar.
“Buy me a drink, Kane.”
I looked at her. “Why do you call me Kane? My name is Malakai.”
“You show disrespect for the universe you created,” she accused. “You don’t even remember your purpose or what makes you different from that asswipe, Kanaloa.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“If you want me to leave, I’ll leave.” She moved a hand over my biceps. “Nice and strong,” she cooed.
“Don’t touch me.” I glared at her.
She shrugged then began to chant in a language long spoken by the gods. My eyes widened as I hung onto every word.
“Kanaloa, coupled with the god Kane in nature. Kanaloa is the old Polynesian sea god of death, of darkness, of the water, and of the squid. It is Kanaloa who is the demon god…where under the influence of sorcery, Kane has the character to heal.”
She looked at me. She had said all that without uttering a word. “Who are you?” I asked her.
“Listen to me, Kane, you are in danger. You have been in a trance, made to forget the power you really hold. Why have you been so delinquent? Don’t you remember how Kanaloa and his spirits rebelled against you at the beginning, and how you sent them down to the underworld?”
I was stunned.
“Your mistake was elevating Kanaloa again. You are too forgiving, and look what he did to you! He fears your power. Yours is far greater than his. It is goodness and…”
“Did you say healing?”
“Of course. You are the natural lord of the Kaleamoku. He is your servant.”
I smiled. “And The Deliverer?”
“An imposter, of course. Don’t you remember your own history? You are a disgrace, Kane, but then”—she smiled with blackened teeth—“you were always a rebellious bad boy, in spite of your goodness. Buy me a drink and I’ll tell you some more.”
I bought the drink. She retold the legend of Hawaii-loa, recalling to me that Kanaloa is the leader of the first company of spirits placed on Earth after it was separated from Heaven, but those spirits were literally spat out by the gods. “Kanaloa led the rebellion against you because they were not allowed to drink awa. You defeated them long ago and they were cast down to the underworld, where Kanaloa, otherwise known as Milu, became ruler of the dead. The legend places Kane and Kanaloa in opposition as the good and evil wishers of mankind for eternity. Your mistake was forgiving him.” She finished her drink, chastising me again. “Why did you?”
“I’m delinquent.” I grinned at her.
“Yes, and you’re about to be challenged by Kaleamoku.”
“Challenged?” I lifted an eyebrow.
